Talking to Collette Ishiyama...

Meet: Collette Ishiyama
Question #1: Tell us a little bit about this collection. What were you inspired by?
This collection, Isis, draws inspiration from some of the same places as my first collection (ancient Egypt, Samurais, architecture), and has new elements of protection, nature, and animals.  I like the concept that jewelry, often times with animal motifs, is meant to be an amulet that protects the wearer. Visually, I wanted to approach animal jewelry in a way that's my own.  I love 70's costume jewelry, and wanted to push the collection in a direction that's dramatic and powerful.  This also ties back into the name Isis, as her headdress was a throne, a representation of power.

Question #2: What was the first piece you ever made?
Eeep- that's a tough one.  I've been making things since forever...so I can't say I really remember.  The first wax carving I casted was a tiny rabbit's foot I made for my sister a while back, does that count?

Question #3: Who was the person who influenced you most?
Artistically, probably Egon Scheile.  His paintings and drawings are really arresting and dark, but there's a certain element of play that's always there.  I like that.

Question #4: If your clothes were stripped away and you could only wear one piece of your jewelry, what would it be?
In public?  I'd have to say the Isis necklace, because it's really big and I'm shy. I'd be looking for maximum coverage in that situation.
